In the flurry of the holidays, your time is stretched thin. You’re unbelievably busy, searching for gifts, rushing from one party to the next, and hosting like crazy. When the bubbly is gone and the confetti has settled, it’s time to reset, shift your focus and get back to you. Here’s our top 5 countdown of self-care ideas for a healthy, happy new year.
5. Learn to say no.
Don’t let over-scheduling and overexertion feelings carry into 2020. You’ll feel over it before it’s begun. It’s critical to set boundaries and protect your most valuable asset: time. Claim it and keep it by learning to say no to events or projects that you truly don’t want to do. You’ll feel more in control and look forward to those events you said yes to—because you really want to be there.
4. Do at least one thing each day for yourself.
You can’t predict how the day is going to go. It could start meeting-free, then your schedule could go full-on crazy by lunch. The work day is out of your control. The one thing that’s in your control is your maintaining own sense of wellbeing, which is why it’s so important to do at least one thing each day that’s just for you. Whether that means working out, or just stepping away from your desk to grab a coffee, you deserve those few moments, and nobody can take from you.
3. Make travel a priority.
It’s easy to get stuck in the rut of the daily grind. Constantly monitoring emails from morning til night can feel like a never-ending work day on repeat. So take it upon yourself to hit pause and turn your attention outward to new adventures in different places. Travel the world—or simply see a different side of your own city. It will do wonders to open your eyes to new sights and ideas that will revitalize your daily life.
2. Strive for balance, not perfection.
Before the clock strikes midnight, you’re already brainstorming your new year’s resolutions, like hitting a crazy ambitious (and unrealistic) goal weight, eating ridiculously clean, reading a zillion page novel or curating the most amazing Instagram page ever. While goals are healthy, unrealistic ideals are not. Instead, make balance the goal. Do what you can, accept what you can’t and embrace the truth that you’re actually perfect right here and now.
1. Reward yourself, just because.
In the spirit of self-care, buy yourself something nice as a reminder that you’re special, valuable and deserve good things in life. After all, you work hard, so you earned it. Treat yourself to that pair of hoops you’ve been eyeing, add a new chain to your mix or a gorgeous ring to your stack. It’s a new year. Make it the year of you.
